How to Run Duet Pilates Sessions for Two Clients

Two women performing exercises on reformer Pilates machines in a bright studio, like a duet Pilates session

A good duet pilates session pairs two clients with compatible goals, uses one shared exercise sequence with a lower and a higher option, and splits the hour so that both people get hands-on attention. It is the format that makes a private room feel like a small studio without the overhead. If you teach in a private rented space, here is how to run the hour from pairing to payment.

Pair people on three things

Matching is more important than any cue. Before you agree to a duet, check:

  • Goals. Two people working toward a similar outcome, such as general strength or a gentle return to exercise, will cooperate with one plan.
  • Health history. Each client needs their own screening. If one has a condition that needs clinician clearance, wait for it, and do not discuss one client’s health with the other.
  • Pace and personality. A chatty pair and a quiet one can both work, but two people who compete or one who feels watched can derail the hour.

Friends, couples and relatives often pair well, though a couple can spend half the session comparing. Set the tone at the start: you are each working with your own body, not racing.

If you also run bigger formats, training couples and small groups in a room built for it covers how those sessions run.

Structure the hour in blocks

A fixed pattern keeps you in control. A typical sixty-minute duet might look like this:

Block Purpose
About 5 minutes Arrival, brief check-in on how each person feels
About 10 minutes Warm-up and breath, shared
About 30 minutes Main sequence, with options for each person
About 10 minutes Targeted work, split into individual focus
About 5 minutes Cool-down and notes

In the individual block, give one client a task they can do alone while you work with the other, then swap. This is where each person gets their private attention. Plan the task in advance, so the waiting client is working and not idle.

Cue two bodies at different levels

You are not teaching a class, but you are also not teaching one person. Techniques that work:

  1. Name the option, not the person. Say “stay low for the first version, or lift into the second,” so neither client is singled out.
  2. Move your position. Stand where you can see both people’s spines and hips, then step in to adjust one while still watching the other.
  3. Use a side-by-side layout. Placing clients side by side facing the same direction makes comparison easy for you and hard for them.
  4. Keep your voice steady. Cues given to one client are heard by both, so make them useful for both.
  5. Check in on each person, by name, at least twice. Silence can feel like neglect.

If your plan includes small apparatus, a few light props can differentiate difficulty without changing the sequence. See portable pilates equipment for private sessions for a kit that travels.

Split the rate and the paperwork

A duet is one hour with two clients, and the rate should reflect that. A common structure is a per-person price below the solo rate with a total above it. The reasoning, with a ladder, is in how much to charge for private pilates sessions, and the mechanics of billing two people are covered in billing semi-private clients.

Agree on these in writing before the first session:

  • Who pays, one person or each separately.
  • What happens if one client cancels, or both.
  • Whether a duet can convert into solos if one leaves.
  • A waiver or intake form for each client, signed individually.

Do not give a discount you cannot afford to repeat. A modest prepay reward works better than a lower hourly figure.

Room and logistics

Check the space before you commit: floor area for two people to lie down and move without touching, a spot for bags and water, and an unobstructed view of both clients. The rooms at Carmel City Center hold one or two guests in a Standard space or up to four in a Plus space, and they are built around strength equipment with open floor, so confirm the layout when you book. Hours run Monday to Friday from 5 AM to 9 PM and weekends from 7 AM to 4 PM.

Run your first duet as a short trial with two friends, note what slowed you down and adjust the block plan before you offer it publicly.

Related questions

What if one partner is much stronger than the other?

Give both people the same exercise with different options, such as a lower and a higher version, and cue the choice out loud. The stronger client stays challenged and the other client stays confident.

Can friends of different ages be paired?

Yes, if their goals and any limits are compatible. Age matters less than health history, comfort with movement and willingness to follow the same pace.

What do I do if one client cancels?

Decide the rule in advance and write it down. Common choices are to run the session as a solo at the solo rate, or to reschedule, and either works when both clients agreed to it beforehand.
